Course content:

Students will analyze data sets by applying various Linux command-line tools including sed and awk. They will learn how to use shell scripting for automated processing of files and how to visualize selected information from data files using gnuplot and R. For more complex data analysis steps they will get some insight into the Perl programming language.

Expected previous knowledge:

Basic Linux knowledge is required which can be obtained by attending the course “Linux skills for AgriGenomics”. Basic knowledge in molecular biology is required.

Learning outcomes:

Ability to explore biology-related data sets on Linux systems.

Teaching and learning methods:

Lecture and practical training plus homework exercises.

Exam method:

Attendance of all sessions is compulsory. Grading will be based on
- active participation during the sessions
- exercise completion (homework)
- final exam.
