English title:
Practical course with field exercises in systematic botany
Course ID:
831102
ECTS credits:
3,0
Title in native language:
Übungen m. Feldarbeiten zur systematischen Botanik
Übungen m. Feldarbeiten zur systematischen Botanik
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
German
Course content:
This practical course for the determination of higher plants is a supplement to the lecture 831.101 Systematic Botany.
Selected examples form the most important native plant families are used for training in plant determination with floras and demonstration of the characters explained in the lecture. These units in the laboratory are supplemented by two units in the field which also have as their focus the identification and determination of native flowering plants.

Expected previous knowledge:
Passing of lecture 831.106 Anatomy and morphology of plants
Learning outcomes:
Based on the course 831.101 “Systematic botany (lecture)”, the knowledge acquired here in parallel is used in practice to determine plants. With the knowledge of the technical terms acquired in the lecture, the students can practice the determination of plant species under the guidance of the lecturer. After successful completion of the course, the students are in a position to recognize important plant families by means of their characters and to independently use the determination guide (“Flora of Austria”) in order to determine plant species.
Exam method:
continuous assessment
The students are given six plants, which they have to determine independently. For each correctly determined plant, 5 points may be obtained (3 for the family, 1 for the genus, 1 for the species).
During the course, the knowledge will be monitored by controlling the group protocols, which have to be delivered for both obligatory field days. The result of the written examination only shows to advantage, if the protocols are evaluated as “successful”.
