Title in native language:
Flow cytometry and cell sorting in biotechnology (in Eng.)
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
English
Course content:
-) Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting: how does it work

-) Safety in the Flow Cytometry Lab

-) Analysis of Production Cell Lines

-) Analysis of Bacterial and Yeast cultures

-) Sorting for high production rates and improved cell performance

-) Cell growth, proliferation and cell death

-) Chromosomes (Flow Karyotyping. Flow-FISH), pH, ROS, Ca, bead arrays, rare events, Flow Virometry

-) Experimental design and data evaluation: practical examples
Expected previous knowledge:
Basic knowledge of cell biology strongly recommended! This course is recommended for master and PhD-students.
Learning outcomes:
Students will know the basic principles and applications of flow cytometry and cell sorting and their use in biotechnology. Participants will be able to identify important aspects of flow cytometric analyses and controls and will be able to design and implement experiments and to interpret results.
Teaching and learning methods:
Course work with high interaction between students and lecturers, lots of practical examples, "Pub Quiz" at the end of each lecture: The students are encouraged to repeat the main ideas of the lecture and apply that knowledge to the interpretation of actual data.

This course will be held online via Zoom!
Exam method:
Active engagement in teamwork in pub-quizzes (via Zoom breakout rooms) during each lecture. Participation in 10 of the 12 quizzes replaces the exam. In case of missing more than two pub-quizzes, an oral exam is required to pass the course.
