Course content:
Students will learn how to use Linux shell commands for file management, information extraction, and automated processing of files. They will learn how to track the computational load while running heavy jobs, locally and on remote machines. They will analyze data sets by applying various Linux command-line tools including sed and awk. They will learn how to quickly generate plots to visualize selected information using gnuplot and R.
Expected previous knowledge:
Basic knowledge in molecular biology. No previous Linux knowledge required.
Learning outcomes:
Ability to work on Linux systems and to explore biological data sets.
Teaching and learning methods:
Lecture and practical training plus weekly exercises.
Exam method:
Attendance of all sessions is compulsory. Grading will be based on
- active participation during the sessions
- exercise completion (weekly homework)
- final exam.
