High throughput sequencing and genome analysis (in Eng.)
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
English
Course content:
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has transformed the way how research is done in biotechnology and life sciences in general. This course will provide students with an introduction to the different topics that can be addressed using high-throughput sequencing. Another focus will be the structure and function of genomes, including the methods used to study these aspects. The LVA will highlight the concepts behind genome analysis as well as experimental and bioinformatic strategies used in the for studying the genome and its function.
Expected previous knowledge:
Master and PhD students of biotechnology or related subjects (Bachelor students will not be accepted).
Learning outcomes:
Students will get familiar with the plethora of applications of NGS technologies, and will get to know the experimental basics of NGS sequencing as well as the challenges imposed by the analysis of NGS data. The seminar will cover original work in the field; the students will acquire competence to present scientific work.
Teaching and learning methods:
The on-site time commitment for the students will be 2 SSt for the lecture course and 1 SSt for the seminar.
Exam method:
- compulsory participation (Anwesenheitspflicht): for a positive grading the seminar needs to be attended on all days (=100%).
- The grading will be composed of
-- Written exam on the theoretical part (40%)
-- Paper presentation (40%)
-- Active participation during sessions (20%)
