Course content:
Anatomy of the protoplast and the ultrastructure of the cell wall. Structure and morphology of the tissues of the plant body with the special consideration of wood. Origin and function of the primary and secondary meristems. Secondary growth. Functional anatomy of the annual ring. Secondary cortex with the formation of the rhytidome. Xylem transport. Reasons for defects in wood.
Learning outcomes:
The general biological understanding of wood has to be awoken and deepened. The fundamental knowledge of the primary and secondary structure in plants are the supposition. A very important point are the developmental aspects from the meristem to the whole plant. Besides, the relation between structure and function should be shown and the reaction of wood to environmental factors, wound, stress, and so on are demonstrated. Moreover, it is shown how to combine fundamental knowledge with practical doing.
Exam method:
To pass the exam successfully 32 points out of a maximum of 60 points have to be achieved.
Open questions on the topics of the lecture are asked.
