English title:
Methods of measuring stress resistance in plants
Course ID:
831302
ECTS credits:
3,0
Title in native language:
Methoden zur Untersuchung der Stressresistenz von Pflanzen (in Eng.)
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
English
Course content:
Stress concepts. Different resistance strategies (tolerance, avoidance) followed by plants. Description and presentation of techniques and instruments to measure essential parameters (e.g. total water potential and its components osmotic potential and pressure potential), stomatal conductance, chlorophyll fluorescence, xylem hydraulic conductivity. Water flow through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Stress-induced cavitation and embolism in the conducting elements of (secondary) xylem. Measurement of vulnerability curves with the acoustic method and the hydraulic method. Comparison of responses found in stressed and non-stressed variants.

The course´s topics may be modified depending on the students´ suggestions and special interest.
Learning outcomes:
Understanding the relationship between impact of abiotic stress factors (e.g. water, temperature, radiation) and different adaptation responses of plants. Application of basic methods suitable to estimate the stress resistance of plants in field and laboratory.
Exam method:
Continuous assessment. The results is for 20% dependent on an evaluation of active participation in the practical work (including attendance), 20% analysis of data (via BOKUonline) and for 60% on a written final exam. 100 points can be gathered in total.

089 - 100 Points = 1
076 - 088 Points = 2
063 - 075 Points = 3
051 - 062 Points = 4
000 - 050 Points = 5
