Course content:
Aromatic and medicinal herbs are an important part of horticulture. Given the diversity of species in this large group and their importance in human health, nutrition and diet, they are economically very valuable. Thus, it is important to learn about these plants, their cultivation, harvesting, use, marketing and importance. The aspects of sustainability, climate change and innovation are given special consideration.
Expected previous knowledge:
Good command of English. Basic knowledge about the plants and plant production are desired.
Learning outcomes:
Basic competences about the production and use of medicinal and aromatic plants. Use of scientific texts, practical experience in the field and in the greenhouse (practical learning about propagation of plants by different methods, care of plants, harvesting and post-harvest behaviour or processing methods, quality determination of various herbs. Understanding sustainability and resource efficiency in herb production.
Teaching and learning methods:
Practical experience with medicinal and aromatic plants and seminar paper with literature review of publications. In the event of a critical COVID-19 situation, alternative methods of completion are offered.
Exam method:
Continuous assessment, practical part and written seminar paper with literature review. In the event of a critical COVID-19 situation, alternative methods of detention are offered.
