Course content:
Presentation of biological agents and biotechnical methods, possibilities of practical use and application specifics. • Natural enemies of pest arthropods (predators, parasitoids and pathogens), their action in prey respectively host populations and possibilities for use in biological control measures, • Physical and chemical stimuli in monitoring and control of phytophagous pests, • Direct and indirect defense mechanisms of plants against phytophagous pests and phytopathogens, • Microbial antagonists of phytopathogens and their application.
.
Expected previous knowledge:
Basic knowledge on diagnosis and biology of arthropod pests and plant diseases, i.e. entomology and phytopathology, microbiology and chemistry.<br>.
Learning outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
• Understand the basic principles, possible practical use and application specifics of biological agents and biotechnical methods, possibilities of practical use.
• Assess advantages and disadvantages of various control methods and agents
• Identify natural antagonists (predators, parasitoids, entomopathogens) of arthropod pests
• Know about the application specifics of antagonists against arthropod pests in biological control strategies
• Understand the basic principles of behavioural control of arthropod pests
• Explain the effects of chemical and physical stimuli that are used for monitoring and control of arthropod pest populations
• Explain different mechanisms of biochemical defence systems in plants and their potential applications
• Apply the most important bioactive plant extracts and preparations against phytopathogens and pests
• Explain basic modes of action of microbial antagonists against phytopathogens
• Assess possible practical use and application specifics of microbial antagonists against phytopathogens
