ECTS credits:
5,0
Title in native language:
Plant metabolomics (in Eng.)
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
English
Course content:
Metabolomics is a young discipline, which deals with the global detection of the entire set of low molecular weight metabolites of a biological system (i.e. the metabolome). This course will teach the fundamentals of modern metabolomics research. The general concept will be illustrated with a practical example study on the metabolism of wheat. The lecture part will cover the basic principles of metabolism and the involved methodology. The practical section will be held in small student groups. You will carry out a complete metabolomics experiment involving
1) the treatment of wheat plants in the greenhouse
2) sampling and sample preparation
3) sample measurements by HPLC and mass spectrometry
4) data evaluation
5) biological interpretation of results
Expected previous knowledge:
Basic knowledge in biochemistry, instrumental analytical chemistry and statistics
Learning outcomes:
You will learn the general concept and how to setup a metabolomics study. The basics of plant biochemistry, HPLC and mass spectrometry will be refreshed and deepened. The practical training will enable to experience all steps of a metabolomics study. Summarizing, interpreting and presenting the results will get acquainted with critically assessing the outcome of a scientific experiment.
Teaching and learning methods:
Theoretical aspects will be taught in lectures while practical lab work and data evaluation will be carried out as exercise in small groups of students
Exam method:
Collaboration during course and final oral presentation/discussion of results with emphasis on particular aspect of metabolomics. Discussion of experiment and scientific outcome.
