Title in native language:
Integrated Pest Management
Term Semester:
Autumn/Winter
Instruction language(s):
English
Greek
Course content:
The course covers topics related to modern, environmental friendly methods and techniques used in animal pest (insects, mites and nematodes) control of economically important crops. Different methods of biological pest control, the theoretical background and the technical and economic aspects of ecological engineering as a tool of modern crop protection in agro-ecosystems are presented and analysed. Furthermore, the course covers the development and interpretation of phenological forecasting models and their practical applications in plant protection. The use of selective plant protection products with lower toxicity to beneficial non-target organisms (predatory insects and mites and pollinators) is discussed in the context of integrated pest management.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, students should be able to: (1) understand the basic principles of biological control in different cropping systems, (2) identify the most important groups of biological control agents, (3) use protocols for the evaluation of the acute toxicity and persistence of certain plant protection products against biological control agents, (4) use ecological engineering as a tool to enhance efficiency of biological control agents in agricultural systems, and (5) organize protocols for pest control in IPM and organic production systems.
Teaching and learning methods:
Cooperative learning, seminar, lectures, discussion
Exam method:
Written report (20 pages maximum), oral presentation (15 min), assessment of individual participation
