Title in native language:
Sciences et IngÈniÈrie du vÈgÈtal-Seed and Plant Propagation
Term Semester:
Autumn/Winter
Instruction language(s):

Course content:
The academic semester is divided into 4 teaching units (TU), subbdivided in several subunits
-TU1 (10 ECTS): Biology and management of seeds and propagation material (big data and experimental design for phenotyping and genotyping; biology and biotechnology of seeds, transplants and clonal material; seed conservation and management of plant biological ressources)
- TU2: (4 ECTS): Knowledge of the seed and plant propagation industry (evolution and challenges of french and international industries; intellectual property and business strategies in seed Industries; entrepreneurship)
- TU3 (8 ECTS): Seeds and clonal material production and postharvest technology (seed and plant sanitary quality; conventional and organic production and seed technology; biocontrol and biostimulation of seed and clonal material)
-TU4 (8 ECTS): Communication and action learning (action learning by industry commissioned project, foreign language (English, German, Spanish))

Seeds and propagating material are at the basis of agriculture and horticulture performance. By producing high quality and innovative material, the sector addresses global issues related to food security, climate change, biodiversity conservation, agroecology and sustainable agriculture. The seed sector is driven by innovation, science and research, and representing a market of nearly 12 billion US $ worldwide. It encompasses a wide diversity of companies, from small, specialized companies to multinationals.
The curriculum is dedicated to the diverse range of seeds and clonal material to ensure successful crop establishment. It is based on interdisciplinary courses that integrate biology, production technologies, conservation strategies, data management and experimental design along with business management, intellectual properties and regulations.
Expected previous knowledge:
M1 level with a background in plant sciences (genetics, physiology, biochemistry, plant pathology) and basic statistics. B2 level English proficiency.
Learning outcomes:
Students will acquire theoretical and practical skills necessary to produce high quality seeds and plant propagating material, namely : to be aware of economical and legal constraints facing the industry and how to protect innovation, interpret large data sets using statistics and R, analyse and interpret genetic diversity and manage seed collections, detect seed-borne pathogens and improve seed/transplant health, to know the biology and biotechnologies of seeds and propagating material, to be aware of different strategies to produce high quality seeds and propagating material, including biocontrol and biostimulation solutions
Teaching and learning methods:
Field practice
Exam method:
Each teaching subunit is evaluated individuall through a continuous review and/or final examination. Final grade takes into account ECTS allocation for each course and an average of 10/20 for each teaching unit is required to get ECTS credits
