Plant Breeding
Course ID:
25004413
ECTS credits:
6,0
Title in native language:
Mejora Genética Vegetal
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
Spanish
Course content:
The course aims at providing students with the key theoretical and practical background needed to design plant breeding programmes. The main theoretical aspects covered are: creation and measurement of genetic variability, management of qualitative and quantitative traits in plant breeding programmes and main methods of selection for the development of major types of plant cultivars. Practical contents are focused on some of the common tasks implemented in breeding programs: creation and phenotyping of variability and use of molecular markers to assist selection.
Expected previous knowledge:
General genetics, Molecular genetics
Learning outcomes:
At the end of this course the students should be able to design the main steps of a breeding program according to the reproductive system of the crop species and the genetic basis of the target traits as well as to assess the cost-benefits of using of molecular markers to assist the selection of superior genotypes during the breeding process.
