English title:
Crop Models for Agro-Environmental Management
Course ID:
203000010
ECTS credits:
4,0
Title in native language:
Modelos de cultivos para la gestión agroambiental
Term Semester:
Spring/Summer
Instruction language(s):
Spanish
Course content:
The course has two sections. In the 1st part the focus is on building crop model components using the tools available in Excel worksheets. Step by step students learn to build one maize crop model. First, a potential crop growth model, and then incorporating a soil water and nitrogen balance. The 2nd part of the course works on the DSSAT crop modeling system and associated tools. Efforts are focused on learning the various tools available to build input files (weather, soil, and experiment), generating and calibrating crop coefficients to simulate specific hybrids and varieties, optimizing irrigation and fertilization management, designing crop rotations, impact and adaptation to climate change, and spatial analysis.
Expected previous knowledge:
Basic knowledge in agricultural climatology, plant physiology and general soil science.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of this course students should be familiar with techniques required to build dynamic crop models. Procedures associated with the simulation of crop processes will be discussed and applied, and students will practice their use by building a simple crop model using Excel worksheets. In the second part of the course, students will learn and practice the various tools available within the DSSAT system to build input files, and tools for agricultural systems analysis.
Teaching and learning methods:
o Lab practice
o Lecture
o Simulation
Exam method:
Every week students will submit a guided homework building on the information and concepts discussed in classes. Final grade will be the average of the weekly homeworks. English can be used for homeworks.
